The term “extreme hair growth” can be misleading, but the ideas behind these hair mask recipes for extremely fast hair growth are usually solid. Unfortunately, the actual recipes are a bit ridiculous. They usually call for you to make a concoction with kitchen supplies, and let your hair soak in it for hours. It’s true that there are hair growth benefits of the ingredients in these recipes, but there are other ways to get thick, full hair growth.
The four most common ingredients in hair masks for extreme hair growth are mustard powder, coconut oil, egg, and olive oil. Here, we’ll talk about why these ingredients are used for hair growth, and how you can reap the same benefits of these ingredients in other ways.
Mustard powder has been around as a hair stimulant for a long time because it is rich in vitamins and nutrients. It contains vitamin A, which helps promote the development of collagen (hair fiber) cells. It also contains vitamin E, which actively protects against environmental irritants, and fatty acids that help moisturize and restore fragile hair strands.
However, mustard has its drawbacks. Not only does it have a harsh smell that can linger, applying mustard to your scalp can be painful. The main ingredient of mustard is allyl isothiocyanate, or AITC. This compound binds to the cells in hair follicles, and creates a burning sensation that can range from intense tingling to extreme burning.
To avoid this burning sensation, we recommend swapping out mustard with one of our favorite essential oils, coconut oil. Coconut oil is a soothing, super-moisturizing essential oil that contains the same beneficial ingredients as mustard to help protect, nourish and moisturize hair, plus it is antifungal and antibacterial.
Applied to the outside of hair strands, the vitamins and fatty acids in coconut oil moisturize and improve shine without the smell or the burn. Coconut oil also helps to protect against damage from the environment and heat styling. Coconut oil absorbs easily into the hair shaft so it’s ideal for a deep conditioner, and you can even use a small amount as a leave-in conditioner.
Egg is used in most “extreme hair growth” recipes because it contains proteins, vitamins, and fatty acids. It strengthens hair and can even help repair damaged strands. There aren’t any painful side effects to worry about from egg, although it does have an awful smell when used alone or with mustard seed.
The simple solution is to add an egg to your shampoo instead of applying it as part of a mustard mix. When it’s time to wash your hair, take a small bowl and mix an egg with a bit of shampoo. Massage the mixture into your hair, and wait 10-15 minutes before washing it out. This egg acts as a natural conditioner, so you don’t have to use your regular conditioner afterwards. You will only need to add egg to your shampoo a couple times a month to see results.
Olive oil is the final ingredient found in most hair mixtures, and for good reason. Olive oil has antibacterial properties that fight off common scalp and hair problems, and it adds moisture to make your hair soft and shiny. We don’t have any problem with olive oil, but you don’t need to combine it with mustard and egg to reap the benefits.
To use olive oil on its own, just pour a small amount into your palms and massage it into your scalp and down to the end of your strands. Let it soak into your hair strands for 15-30 minutes, and then wash and condition as you normally would.
