Eleven of the world’s top hairstylists share their secrets for healthier, thicker, more gorgeous hair.

Getting healthier hair doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, if you ask most hairstylists for their number-one, game-changing healthy hair tip, their advice is easily distilled into a few common themes. It’s so simple, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do these things sooner. (This article is adapted from one that originally appeared on Fashionista.com.)

1. Take a Vitamin

“Try a great hair vitamin, which can really help over time. My personal favorite… [is] Viviscal…” —Jennifer Yepez, whose clients include Gigi Hadid, Jessica Alba, Adriana Lima and Salma Hayek

2. Find the Right Shampoo & Conditioner

“My number-one tip for healthy hair is using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. If you don’t start with the right foundation when washing and conditioning, your hair will never be as gorgeous and healthy as it should…” —Justine Marjan, whose clients include Khloé Kardashian, Olivia Culpo, Chrissy Teigen and Lily Aldridge

3. Skip a Wash or Two

“Don’t wash it every day. Style with heat day one, then on day two, opt for a high ponytail or sleep in a couple of braids for texture.” —Kylee Heath, whose celebrity clients include Kristen Stewart, Riley Keough and Ashley Benson.

4. Condition

“Use a weightless leave-in conditioner. Every client I have uses it and tells me how it changed their hair. My go-to [from Sexy Hair] has been the same for over 10 years…” —Kristin Ess, whose clients include Lauren Conrad and Lucy Hale

5. …With This Conditioning Technique

“My go-to technique for healthy hair is that in the shower put conditioner on the ends of your hair first while your hair is dry, and comb it through with a wide-tooth comb. Then, leaving the conditioner on the ends, apply shampoo to just the scalp and rinse out both the shampoo and conditioner together. If your hair is extra-dry, then condition one more time from lengths to ends. Since shampoos can be drying and can strip too many oils out of the hair, this trick will ensure that the shampoo doesn’t penetrate the ends of your hair, where everyone needs a little extra moisture.” —Marc Mena, whose clients include Christy Turlington, Mary Louise Parker and Nina Garcia

6. Naturally Gorgeous

“Embrace your natural hair texture—stop using heat!” —Riawna Capri, whose clients include Julianne Hough, Emma Roberts and Nina Dobrev

7. Stay Cool

“A cool rinse in the shower and a cool shot of your blow-dryer can help to close the cuticle (the outer layer of the hair) to help protect it from the elements! It’s a minor thing that can make a big difference in the health of your hair.” —Sarah Potempa, whose clients include Margot Robbie, Bryce Dallas Howard, Hailee Steinfeld and Kate McKinnon

8. Make the Cut

“I wish clients would get a trim more often and not be afraid. You can have length, but the key is for the hair to be healthy. [Getting a trim every] 10 to 12 weeks will keep the dead ends off.” —Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, whose clients include Kerry Washington and Ashley Graham

9. Don’t Stand the Heat

Heat protect, heat protect, heat protect and when you’re done, heat protect. Use your settings on your tools! Irons are made with heat ranges for all hair types, so knowing your hair type and how much heat is needed to create the look is important. Don’t think that 450 degrees will create a better wave than 350 degrees will; it’s hair type and texture that determine the temperature needed.” —Matt Fugate, whose clients include Karlie Kloss and Lena Dunham

10. Be the Girl Behind the Mask

“Using a deep-conditioning mask in your hair once a week will improve hair quality drastically. My favorite is Unite 7 Seconds Masque.” —Nikki Lee, whose clients include Sarah Hyland, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens

11. …Or Try One of These Other Masks

“I always suggest keeping your hair moisturized. When your hair is dry and brittle it is more susceptable to breakage. A good moisturizing hair masque every three to four weeks is a good way to hydrate your hair.” —Lacy Redway, whose clients include Lupita Nyong’o, Uzo Aduba, Olivia Palermo, Jourdan Dunn, Priyanka Chopra and Gillian Jacobs
