DHT blockers help to prevent the hormone testosterone from reacting with 5-alpha reductase and producing dihydrotestosterone, which bonds with androgen receptors at the root of hair follicles and interrupts the normal hair-growth cycle by denying nutrients to hair shafts. FDA-approved treatments that block DHT help arrest thinning hair and stimulate dormant follicles to resume normal growth. The treatments can be expensive and require continuous maintenance, and they sometimes generate side effects. Deciding whether to begin DHT blocker therapy depends on your self-image, facial structure, possible health complications and personal preferences about hair.

Thinning Hair Styles Complement Some Faces

You might only need to make some changes to your hair style to make hair look fuller, more lively and playful. Short haircuts complement thin hair by making it look thicker and healthier. Bobs create volume, and choppy layers add texture to thin, flat hair. Short cuts add width to thin faces but could prove unappealing for oval or wide faces. Layers soften the edges of triangular faces and strengthen character in round faces that don't have particularly strong features. Curly styles complement square jaws and soften facial lines to provide an aesthetically pleasing balance.

Tips for Managing Thin Hair

Regardless of styling strategy, try to keep your thinning hair as healthy as possible. Use combs and brushes designed for thin hair to minimize breakage. Hair dryers and heat treatments damage hair, so use them sparingly and for special occasions, but take advantage of shorter styles for shampoo-and-go convenience.

Use cool heat settings and keep dryers six to eight inches from the hair.

Try volumizing shampoos and conditioners to make hair appear fuller.

You can hide thin spots by lightening hair color to make hair look more like the scalp.

Wigs, weaves and hair replacements offer viable alternatives if short or thin hair styles don't complement your face or personal style.

Personal Style and Appearance Influence Your Decision

Some people consider hair a crowning glory while others only care about fashion because of social or business pressures. Attractive hairstyles bring social and business benefits, increase self-confidence and demonstrate your personal sense of style. Both men and women can look attractive with thin hair or pursue various cosmetic options to improve their appearances. Deciding whether to begin DHT blocker therapy depends on how important your hair is to your self-image, how hair affects your appearance, budgetary concerns, possible side effects and other factors. DHT therapy, however, offers real hope for restoring thinning hair and strengthening hair health.

Fashion-forward people chat with their friends and peers before changing their hair styles, buying new wardrobes or pursuing cosmetic strategies to change their appearances. Boutiques, hairstylists and clothing designers check Facebook and Twitter before introducing new clothing lines and customer services.

The Celebrity Culture Has Changed

Celebrities traditionally influenced fashion from red-carpet appearances, fashion magazine spreads, films to television shows, but today, anyone can attract followers and influence style and fashion habits through YouTube videos, social media posts, links to photographs and fashion blogs. Pictures on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest attract media attention, influence designers and cause contemporary celebrities to change their hairstyles and wardrobes to stay current with their fans.

Young People Draw Inspiration from Social Media

People now get their beauty ideas from YouTube, Tumblr, Polyvore and other websites, and fashionable men and women share their fashion ideas, get styling tips, learn how to disguise thinning hair and get ideas for accessories, nail art, body tattoos and piercings, and other popular fashion trends. Online videos help resourceful people learn how to braid hair, apply makeup, choose complementary colors and impress their friends, associates and romantic partners.

Social Media Forums Express Personal Style

Everyone can influence friends, peers, business associates and contemporary styles by expressing their preferences on social media forums and posting photographs and videos that capture imaginations and influence trends. Hairstylists and fashion designers increasingly take their cues from information they get through social media channels. Women and men learn new styling techniques and get fresh ideas for dealing with thinning hair, attracting attention in fashion-focused crowds, including starting trends based on personal style. Celebrity styles have always influenced hair styles and fashion, but creative fashionistas can now extend their influence to peers, friends and virtual strangers through social media outlets.

Choose Styles that Impress

Mass media and social links not only increase subculture influence but also strengthen exposure to celebrity and role model styles and fashions. Celebrities will always influence the fashion industry and hairstyling trends, but social media interaction allows young people to both draw inspiration and influence other people through social contacts and instant communication. Hair styles create powerful first impressions, and social sharing helps celebrities, fashion professionals, and subculture enthusiasts showcase their fashion ideas, impress other people, and launch new hair and fashion trends.

Social media influence helps people become more style-savvy, learn about trending fashions quickly and collaborate with their peers to choose the best hair and fashion options for social occasions, business meetings, leisure activities and attracting media attention.

You need not be embarrassed by thinning hair because you can choose from several strategies to ameliorate hair loss and enhance your personal appearance. Some people employ multiple methods for dealing with thinning hair that include using volumizing shampoos, scheduling hair transplant or hair plug procedures, beginning DHT blocker therapies to regrow hair, using hairpieces, extensions and wigs, and styling hair in ways that disguise thin hair.

Personalized Solutions to Rejuvenate Your Life

Attractive hair styles for both men and women help to rejuvenate energy, inspire confidence and make people feel younger. You don't need to live with thinning hair because new products and techniques offer custom solutions to hide thin areas, generate strong social impacts, and make other people think that you have full, thick hair.

Hair length is important because short hair looks fuller and accentuates certain facial features, a strategy which draws attention away from the hair.

Wigs, hair weaves, extensions and hairpieces give you many cosmetic options to change your look.

FDA-approved DHT blocker therapy rejuvenates hair.

Better shampoos and conditioners add volume to thin or fine hair.

Laser photo therapy and other surgical techniques prove useful for some people who have thinning hair.

Choosing the right hair style helps to disguise thin hair or focus attention away from the scalp.

Clever Styling Techniques Disguise Thinning Hair

Teasing hair adds volume and helps to cover thin spots by making it impossible to see the scalp. For men, buzz cuts hide thin hair, and the technique works especially well for people who have strong, masculine features. Figure-eight braids, French braids, buns and other styles make hair appear thicker but carefully controlled.

Bobs and pixie cuts for women disguise thin hair but look perky and fresh.

Adding height to the front of hair makes hair appear fuller.

Shags and layer cuts add volume and depth to short hair styles.

Eyeglasses, scarves and hair accessories can disguise thin hair but look completely natural.

Dark hair shows balding spots on the scalp more clearly, so consider lightening your hair.

Spray-on products can color the scalp and hide thinning hair.

Wigs, hairpieces, transplants, DHT blocker therapy and other cosmetic options help to improve your personal appearance, restore self-confidence, and generate social and business benefits. Choosing the right option for your personal situation depends on understanding the various steps you could take. Hair regrowth and treatment strategies, cosmetic techniques, surgery and certain styling techniques give you many choices when dealing with thinning hair.

The conference is a haven for like-minded hair health professionals looking to improve upon existing hair growth options and eradicate scalp disease in addition to many forms of alopecia. The event welcomed hair research societies from Europe, North America, Japan, Korea, India and Australia; product demonstrations, research presentations and the sharing of new innovations in hair care research was encouraged.

Prominent Vancouver, BC hair supplement manufacturer, RepliCel Life Sciences Inc., discussed the 12-month safety results of its product. Led by RepliCel’s chief scientific officer, Dr. Kevin McElwee, the presentation provided a breakdown of Phase I of the company’s clinical trials, which utilized RCH-01 as a possible combatant against androgenetic alopecia. Biologix Hair Inc., a patent-pending hair therapy system manufacturer based out of Ontario, CA, exhibited its product to increase awareness of its efficacy. The company is currently seeking FDA approval of its Biologix Hair Therapy System™ for use within the United States.

Viviscal, an amino-rich marine extract complex formulated to promote hair growth for both men and women, made history in Edinburgh when it became the first dietary supplement to be welcomed by the World Congress for the treatment of thinning hair. Viviscal representative, Dr. Glynis Ablon, MD, FAAD, offered up statistically significant findings from the company's 2012 hair growth program, “Viviscal Double Blind Placebo Controlled Trial on Women 2012”. A 7.4 percent increase in overall hair thickness in women after six months in addition to an 18.3 percent reduction in hair shedding after just three months of supplement consumption were shown in a study of daily supplement doses given to women with perceived thinning of hair. The double-blind, placebo controlled study was conducted at multiple sites for a duration of six months.

T. Nakajima, EH. Wang, K. Matsushima, A. de Jong, T. Lovewell, SI. Jo and X. Wu were awarded poster prizes during the conference, while L. Poterlowicz and C. Clavel were recognized for putting on the best presentations. Lynn Petukhova, a research associate at Columbia University, has performed extensive research to define and establish the genetic basis of alopecia areata. Petukhova was awarded with the prestigious Jurgen Schweizer Award following the triennial conference.

These and other significant findings were discussed during the conference, allowing its participants to brainstorm better hair loss solutions in addition to devising possible cures for the hair and scalp diseases that plague thousands of victims globally. With the information presented during the 7th World Congress for Hair Research, national hair health association members are better equipped to manufacture products that put an end to hair loss and one day, could wipe out baldness-causing diseases once and for all.

Men's hairstyles change less frequently than women's styles because classic cuts and superior styling create put-together looks that resists the pressures of transitory trends. Frankly, men embrace change more slowly and stick with conservative looks that work for them. You can always look fashionable by getting frequent precision cuts, grooming carefully and taking care of your hair. Noting this disclaimer, the New York Fashion Show and other worldwide fashion venues do suggest certain trends for spring 2013. Foremost among these trends is medium-length hair styles that men can style in dramatic waves or gel into sleek, refined hairstyles for formal occasions.

The Slick Look and Medium Waves

Both of the most popular styles this season depend on precision cuts that make hair look natural and carefree but retain adequate length to create distinctive looks. Hair that is fairly long on top stays healthy, building strength to resist breakage and damage from the weather. This quality doesn't mean that you need to embrace comb overs, though they can look sexy on younger men who have nothing to hide. You can slick-back longish hair on top of the head or comb it over with gels for formal occasions and style your hair in windblown waves for everyday use. The style gives you versatile choices of hairstyles for any occasion.

Medium waves create messy, windblown looks, but getting the perfect shape for your facial structure requires finding a talented stylist who specializes in precision cuts. Getting the perfect look takes careful blow-drying, extra grooming time and the application of protective hair products. Of course, the upside of this attention is healthier hair that resists damage from the sun, salt water and participating in windy sports.

Wavy Styles Offer Versatile Looks that Work in Most Social Situations

Medium hair on top gets set off by keeping your hair carefully trimmed in the back and on the sides. You can part the hair on the side and create a messy wave that adds height and body, and the technique works for fine, medium, thick or curly hair. Another technique involves parting hair irregularly in the middle and creating gentle waves to either side to create a dramatic effect.

The Slick Comb Over

Spring 2013 fashion models and celebrities frequently sported the slick look, but this style can damage the scalp when worn too often.

Oil and grease can accumulate and cut off oxygen to hair roots, but fortunately you can shampoo your hair daily as long as you use the right shampoo formulation for your hair and condition at least once a week. Medium-long hair on top allows you the options of looking impeccably groomed at work, transforming your appearance by spiking your hair with gel for clubbing, and styling the top of your hair in waves for informal outings with friends, business associates and romantic partners. Men's hairstyles run the gamut from buzz cuts to dramatic spiked mohawks, but the latest trend of wearing hair medium-length on top and neat on the sides offers more options for men who wish to appear fashionable but casual.

Simplicity ruled the runway during New York Fashion Week and beyond as collections are still being shown all over the world. Designers opted for simple and easy to achieve hair and makeup choices, to accent their collections. More often than not, runway hair and makeup trends are fun to see on models, but were difficult to translate into our everyday culture and style, until now. The styles dominating the runway can be easily recreated in the comfort of your own home and don’t require a professional stylist to achieve. Enjoy these three simple, but fashionable styles that will give you runway chic wherever you are. Accent any of the below styles with ribbons, bows or hats, which were also extremely popular with many designers. Hair accessories are a great way to express your personal style and add personality to your overall fashion statement.

The Knot

The Knot is a simple, yet classic hairstyle that screams elegant and well put together. Many designers including; American designer, Ralph Lauren opted for the style during New York Fashion Week Fall 2013 collections. Also known as a low chignon, the style can be achieved with or without a part by: 1.) Blow drying the hair straight 2.) Put straight hair in a low ponytail 3.) Wrap the hair around to create a loop with the hair pointing up. 4.) Finish the style off with an anti-frizz holding spray.

Braids

Braids are a classic hairstyle, easy to achieve and carefree in maintaining. Neat or messy, there is never-ending creativity in the different variations of the braid style. Designers had models strut the runway with their modern takes on the French braid, fishtail braid and basic single plait braid. Some designers even created their own new braid-like interpretations. To achieve a simple single plait braid: 1.) Separate the hair in three sections 2.) Choose the side of the head you want the braid to lay on 3.) Using a crossing pattern, take the left hair portion and cross it over the middle, then the right over the middle. 4.) Continue the crossing pattern until you reach the end of the hair 5.) Use a ponytail holder or other hair accessory to secure the braid tightly.

Rock N Roll Waves

Nineties rock band grunge gets an upgrade with the modern version of rock n’ roll waves. The undone/done look was adopted by Versace, BCBG and Calvin Klein during New York Fashion Week. The look is cool, sexy and uncomplicated. Here is how you get this look at home: 1.) Apply mouse or volumizing foam to damp hair 2.) Scrunch the ends of the hair with your hands to create a natural bend pattern 3.) Twist the hair into a bun and let dry 4.) After the hair is dry, release the hair 5.) Spray with a soft holding spray.

Few things can be more frustrating to a man than going bald. Honestly, it really does bother most men. What’s the culprit behind male baldness? It’s the male hormone Dihydrotestosterone, otherwise known as DHT. This hormone is essential to human male development, including changes in the voice, the production of acne, hair growth and the onset of puberty. This manly hormone is important to the male species.

However, there’s a nasty side to DHT. In addition to giving us much-needed manly qualities, it can turn on us and cause baldness. When DHT is converted in the bloodstream and then reaches the scalp, it binds with androgen receptors on the hair follicle, interfering with the growth of hair. It also keeps vital nutrients and oxygen from nourishing the hair. As a result, hair loss occurs when the hair follicles literally starve. The most vital part of the hair follicle, which is responsible for hair growth, is called the dermal papilla.

The papilla gets its nourishment from the surrounding capillaries. The androgen receptors also contained within the papilla is what DHT binds to.

The follicles’ susceptibility to the affects of DHT causes miniaturization, which greatly shortens the lifespan of the hair. Miniaturization is the gradual shrinking or starving of the follicle. This results in finer, softer hair and is the “peach fuzz” that many men with male-pattern baldness experience. Our hair has growing and resting phases, and DHT interferes with those phases. As the process continues, the follicles continue to shrink until they eventually shut down. The disturbing part of this process is that once the follicle shuts down, it’s permanent.

Male pattern baldness is technically termed androgenetic alopecia, which usually begins at the temples and works its way back, ending in a horseshoe pattern. Genetics play a part in the way our hair follicles react to DHT, and about thirty percent of men show signs of thinning or balding by age thirty and sixty-five percent of men by age sixty.

Luckily, there are some ways that we can fight back. Start by reducing your stress levels and practice gentle scalp massage when in the shower. Take a good multi-vitamin in addition to follicle-healthy supplements. These include Saw-Palmetto, Green Tea extract, Grape Seed and White Pine extract, amino acids, or Viviscal Man - a drug-free hair growth supplement clinically proven to prevent male baldness. Finally, switch out the harsh chemicals you’re using on your hair in favor of more natural, gentle products. Baby that scalp!

Many women are surprised when they suddenly find themselves shedding inordinate amounts of hair a few months after giving birth. However, this is a perfectly normal part of life, and the loss is only temporary.

During pregnancy, many women find that their hair looks better than ever. Increased levels of estrogen mean that hair does not shed at its normal levels during pregnancy. More hairs than usual are stuck in the growing phase. This means fewer hairs are in the resting phase, and shedding is minimal. For this reason, many pregnant women enjoy hair that appears fuller and thicker than normal.

As estrogen levels start to taper off a few months post-partum, more hairs go into the resting phase. This phase is always followed by shedding. This event explains why hair seems to start falling out all at once. It can be quite alarming to find big clumps of hair in your brush or shower drain, but once the extra hairs your body retained during pregnancy fall out, the level of shedding should return to normal.

It can take a few months for the period of post-partum hair loss to pass. During this time, you can a few measures to keep your hair looking its best. While this hair fall is inevitable to some degree, taking a multivitamin can help ensure that you do not have any vitamin deficiencies that could exacerbate hair loss. Biotin is one vitamin that can make a difference for some people. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can also contribute to hair health. Foods like avocados, nuts and fish are all good sources of omega-3.

Some women find that a scalp massage can help. Gently massaging the scalp with your fingertips can increase blood flow to the scalp, which helps stimulate the hair follicles. It is also important to be gentle to your hair during this time to keep loss to a minimum. This is not the time for harsh chemical treatments, hair coloring or tight ponytails. Treat your hair gently to avoid breakage, which will only make your hair appear even thinner.

Post-partum hair loss is a normal occurrence for many women. If your hair is suddenly falling out in droves and you recently had a baby, you do not need to run out and buy a wig just yet. A bit of patience and extra care can help you get through this unpleasant time.

It happened to me. I used to chuckle at the older women in my office as they fanned themselves and stripped off their cardigans only to put them back on after a few minutes. I listened to them complain about their weight gain. I noticed the new hairstyle trending was going short and gray. Then it happened to me. I have been through adolescence and puberty, have given birth to two children, and survived the stress of a divorce. I really thought I had the hormonal thing under control until I reached age 45. That's when it happened to me.

Menopause. From the Greek word "pausis" and the root (men) "month" literally translated means the "end of monthly cycles". My co-workers had all the classic symptoms. Hot flashes, weight gain, dry skin, mood swings, lifeless hair and brittle nails. What they did not mention was the hair loss.

My hair had issues throughout the previous hormonal changes, however, this was different. These changes that occurred were somewhat surprising. Not so much the gray, I noticed that after the birth of my first child at the age of 28, which was the same age my Mother's coal black tresses turned to snow white. Hair color was the simple solution. Most shocking was my hair, which was stick straight throughout my entire life, began to curl on its own. I realized the only solution for this "new hair" was to go au naturel. The less I fought it the better it was. Friends and acquaintances were stunned at the sight of my new coiffure. More importantly, it was during this time I felt an unusually large amount of hair in my hands after shampooing. The need to unclog my shower drain was ever prevalent. The curls somewhat camouflaged the thinning, dull, dry, lifeless strands but this was a problem. This was an unnerving problem that also resulted in thinning eyebrows and eyelashes, which lead to a doctor's visit.

Hair loss in women can be the symptom of other underlying medical conditions. Testing involves a routine blood test including hormone and thyroid levels. The good news is that hair loss is treatable. I was relieved to discover this thing happening to me was menopause. In a few years, I am 52 now, I can look back and laugh with the younger girls in the office and tell them how it happened to me.

This year, the latest spring hairstyles followed a common theme of unconventional style, disheveled volume and knotted dos that borrowed accessories from gardens, sports activities and bizarre headgear, such as beekeepers' nets.

Knotted Hair, Tousled Curls and Fishtail Braids

The theme of fishtail braids appeared as the crowning touch in many top-designer collections, reversing last year's trend of elegant chignons and carefully executed French braids. Twisted side ponytails, bed hair and hair that looks wet from the shower also figured prominently as complements to spring fashion collections. Braids have retained their popularity for several seasons now, appearing more frequently in haunted hairstyles, half-braided, unfinished styles and nonchalant, wet ponytails.

Diagonal hairstyles with side parts create wearable art that balances many kinds of facial bone structures. Centered parts work best for women with perfect features because these symmetrical looks always emphasize the least attractive side of the face. Unique ponytails, messy braids and minimalist looks offer greater volume, easy maintenance, brilliant style and flattering looks for most women.

Fishtail Braids Capture Spring 2013 in a Loose Net

Curly, dry and frizzy hair works well when put in carefree fishtail or herringbone braids. You might fear that this style is harder to achieve than regular braids, but the disheveled look of this year's top celebrities leaves plenty of room for interpretation. Jennifer Lawrence sports this look in "The Hunger Games," and designers have embraced the style in low ponytails, off-center side styles and asymmetrical twin braids. Many women create simple adornments by including small fishtail braids in front or back to make volumized hair pop.

Creating the Fishtail Braid

Gather the hair you want to braid in a ponytail and separate it into two sections instead of three. You recreate the third braid with small hair sections with each braiding turn.

Hold both sections of hair in one hand, keeping them separate with your index finger.

Separate a small section of hair from one-half of the hair braid it the opposite way. Then, repeat the process with the other half.

You can make your braid as tightly or loosely as you choose, but current vogue favors the relaxed, tousled look.

The braid will be hard to see until you have progressed fairly far along the hair.

You can secure the end with a tie or band, spray the hair with product and pull the braid into a loose, relaxed look.

You can use curling irons to help manage curly or frizzy hair and sleep on wet hair to add volume to fine hair with minimal attention. Wake up, spray your fine, wet hair with volumizing hairspray and proceed to arrange an off-center ponytail, loose chignon or fishtail braid.

Creating a Look that Suggests You Just Rolled Out of Bed

You can use braids to add volume and create a naturally untidy look. This simple technique helps to add volume to fine hair and creates an undone texture. Braid damp hair at night and spray with your favorite hair product, securing the ends with bands or clips. In the morning, loosen clips and use your hands or a wide-tooth comb to fluff hair and create the bed-head look.

Spring hairstyles favor all kinds of braids, off-center ponytails, wet-hair looks, loose hair knots and untidy chignons. You can create trendy fishtail braids more easily than you think and match the style of fashion trendsetters like Hailee Steinfeld, who wowed fans at the New York Fashion Week show. These braided styles look fun and fresh, and you can learn how to braid your hair quickly. Remember that practice makes your fishtail braid imperfect and stylish.
