Do you wake up every morning with a serious case of bedhead? We’ve all been there. Luckily, there is a simple step you can add to your nighttime routine that will guarantee better hair in the morning. It’s called pineapple hair! While the name may sound strange, many women – especially those with curly hair – swear by this technique to wake up with smooth, tangle-free strands. If you want to learn how to pineapple hair, keep reading!

What is Pineapple Hair?

Pineapple hair is an updo worn to keep hair healthy and knot-free overnight. By following the hair pineapple method, you are ensuring that your curls look fresh in the morning. That way, you won’t need to wash your hair to refresh your curls. Not only does this method save you time, but it’s also better for your hair! Shampooing too often can leave hair dry and dull.

Basically, a hair pineapple is a loose ponytail or bun at the top of your head. By keeping your hair up, you prevent tangles and frizz as you toss and turn during the night. Think of it as keeping your curls out of harm’s way! Plus, keeping the hair pineapple nice and loose means you won’t wake up with a big crimp in your hair, as you would with a traditional ponytail or hair bun.

What Do I Need to Pineapple Hair?

You’ll need a few supplies for this protective hairstyle:

  • Your favorite conditioner
  • A scrunchie or fabric hair tie
  • A silk or satin scarf
  • Optional: a silk or satin pillowcase

How to Pineapple Hair

The good news is, it’s so easy to pineapple hair! Just follow these simple steps.

    1. Before you go to bed, apply a dollop of Viviscal Strengthening Conditioner to your hair, paying special attention to the ends. Leaving in the conditioner overnight allows all of those yummy nutrients to soak into your hair while you sleep.
    2.  Bend forward and create a high ponytail.
    3. Slip a hair scrunchie or fabric hair tie over your ponytail. Do not wrap the scrunchie around more than once, or you’ll create an indentation in your hair. Not what you want!
    4. For extra protection, wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf. Alternatively, you can sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase.
    5. In the morning, remove the scrunchie and shake out your curls.

Hint: if you have textured hair, you might find that you’re still waking up with indented hair, even when you use a loose fabric scrunchie or hair tie. If this is the case, try tying the hair pineapple with a silk scarf instead.

Can You Pineapple Long Hair?

Absolutely! You can use the pineapple technique even if your hair is very long. Instead of making a high ponytail with the scrunchie, opt for a loose bun. Then wrap your hair in a scarf to make sure everything stays protected and secure.

What About Short Hair?

If you have short hair, you can still pineapple your hair. Follow the steps above, gathering as much hair as possible into the scrunchie. If you have small pieces that are too short to fit into the scrunchie, you can use a scarf or fabric headband to hold them in place.

If your hair is too short to pull into a hair tie, you can also wrap your hair in a silk scarf before bed. This will keep your hair from getting frizzy while you sleep.Woman with curly hair in bun
